People were leaving, and the bar door opened and closed often, letting out snippets of chatter. It was nearly two in the morning when I heard the click of the lock and then familiar footsteps on the stairs.

Ashley walked into the room and sat on the bed facing me.

“You look tired,” I said, eying her untidy bun and sunken shoulders.

“I was alone for the last couple of hours. The girl that helps me, Savvy, had to leave earlier.”

“She left? Why? It seemed that the whole pack was here. What could be so urgent?”

“Her mate lost the fight today. He was pissed. He got drunk and was about to start the rematch. I told her to drag him home before that knucklehead started a fight in the middle of the drunken crowd, which would end with trashing my bar.”

“Did he stay? Eric?”

“Just for one drink. With Max. When he left, Max tagged along.”

“Of course he did. He’s trying to turn Eric against me, keeps digging this giant pit so one day he can push me in and make sure I can’t climb out. And as much as it pains me to say this, if I get caught, it would mean he’s a good friend and a perfect future beta who was doing his job, and who could then throw his victorious I told you so at Eric.”

Ashley slowly shook her head. “We can’t let that happen. What did Eric say when he came around? How did he react?”

“He knew I used magic. But I compelled him at once, while he was weak.” I sighed. “But now I wonder . . .”

“Wonder about what?”

“I made a mistake. He’s part of the secret council. He knows about the relics, so Aaron doesn't need to hide them from Eric. I think he knows the safe combination. And since I was using magic anyway, I could—”

“No. Thank God, you didn’t. No more magic. If Eric tells Aaron about you knocking him out, it would already be enough to make Aaron very suspicious. No girl could do that. Eric is too strong.”

“God, I really screwed up, didn’t I?” I pulled my knees to my chest and hugged them.

Ashley's eyes squinted as she looked at me. “What the hell happened at that dinner?”

“My boyfriend showed up.” I heaved a deep breath, then told her everything that happened at the restaurant and to the moment when I hexed Eric. “As you can see, I had to protect myself. He left me no choice. Plus, now I’m afraid that Finn is going to fly off the handle. Not being able to contact me will drive him crazy and he could do something even more dangerous.”

Ashley pulled her phone out of her pocket. She threw it at me, and I caught it. “Send him a text, tell him you’re fine and he can save this number in case he needs to contact you. Even if Eric buys you a new phone, he might still check it for calls and texts, you know.
